XAMPP – Web Server

Many people know from their own experience that it’s not easy to install an Apache web server and it gets harder if you want to add MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really very easy to install and to use – just download, extract and start.

At the moment there are four XAMPP versions:

  • a version for Linux systems (tested for Ubuntu, SuSE, RedHat, Mandrake and Debian),
  • a version for Windows 98, NT, 2000, 2003, XP and Vista,
  • a beta version for Solaris SPARC (developed and tested under Solaris 8),
  • and a beta version for Mac OS X.

This “product slider” is similar to a straight forward gallery, except that there is a slider to navigate the items.

1. Markup that allows us to place several items within a list, and that overflows out of sight.
2. A slider widget to control what subsection of products we can see.
3. Logic to translate the sliders position to slide the products inversely

I found an article a few weeks back about javascript frameworks (Top 10 Javascript Frameworks – Which do you prefer?), and the general consensus was that jQuery was the best. I like scriptalicious and Prototype, but I have been looking at MooTools recently, and I like what I see. Here is the best of what I have found:

By Michael Irigoyen, June 18th, 2009
Without argument, one of the most important things to consider when creating a website is that it be accessible to everyone who wants to view it. Does your website play nice with screen readers? Can a user override your style sheet with a more accessible one and still see everything your website has to offer? Would another Web developer be embarrassed if they saw your code? If your website is standards-compliant, you could more confidently answer these questions.

Accessibility

Let’s take a look at 10 ways to improve the accessibility of your XHTML website by making it standards-compliant. We’ll go the extra mile and include criteria that fall beyond the standards set by the W3C but which you should follow to make your website more accessible. Each section lists the criteria you need to meet, explains why you need to meet them and gives examples of what you should and shouldn’t do.

Based on Slimbox and the Mootools javascript library, mediaboxAdvanced can handle your images, videos, animations, social video sites, inline elements, and external pages with ease.

mediaboxAdvanced 0.9.9 is available for download below. Duplicate links (of any type) in the same set are automatically consolidated, added an option to ignore extraneous keyboard commands while the overlay is open (does not affect iFrames, so input forms can still work fine), and fixed the javascript API.
