WampServer – Windows web development environment
Posted on 29. Sep, 2009 by SiteBox.
WampServer is a Windows web development environment. It allows you to create web applications with Apache, PHP and the MySQL database. It also comes with PHPMyAdmin to easily manage your databases.
WampServer installs automatically (installer), and its usage is very intuitive. You will be able to tune your server without even touching the setting files.
WampServer is the only packaged solution that will allow you to reproduce your production server. Once WampServer is installed, you have the possibility to add as many Apache, MySQL and PHP releases as you want.
WampServer also has a trayicon to manage your server and its settings.

XAMPP – Web Server
Posted on 29. Sep, 2009 by SiteBox.
Many people know from their own experience that it’s not easy to install an Apache web server and it gets harder if you want to add MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really very easy to install and to use – just download, extract and start.
At the moment there are four XAMPP versions:
- a version for Linux systems (tested for Ubuntu, SuSE, RedHat, Mandrake and Debian),
- a version for Windows 98, NT, 2000, 2003, XP and Vista,
- a beta version for Solaris SPARC (developed and tested under Solaris 8),
- and a beta version for Mac OS X.

50 Social News Websites: A List of General and Niche Social Media Communities
Posted on 28. Sep, 2009 by SiteBox.
I recently wrote a beginners guide to social news websites and this article follows up on that by offering a list of the social news websites you can use to get information and web traffic.
There are a great deal of social news sites on the internet, sometimes too many. Most of them are dormant and are no longer active, largely because they were poorly marketed and hence, never had an active community of users in the first place.
For instance, this webpage has a list of over 380 social news sites. Most of them are a waste of your time: they are riddled with spam or are so ill-promoted that they’ll never attract a critical mass of viewers or social news participants.
You don’t have a lot of time on your hands. You want a community that gives you fresh news on topics you care about. You want something that sends prospects and traffic while branding your website or business. You want a social news site with a long term returns on investment. Here’s a list of some of them.

YAML Builder & Simple Project
Posted on 27. Aug, 2009 by SiteBox.
The YAML Builder is a tool for visually creating YAML-based CSS layouts. It allows for the setting of basic layout characteristics like the number and positioning of the content columns, as well as the dynamic creation of grid-based layouts by dragging and dropping subtemplates. Not quite WYSIWYG, but close!
The code generated by the Builder is based on the file structure of the “Simple Project” template, so that the complete result can be copied and pasted directly, without changing a thing. The required XHTML markup, the screen layout, as well as the layout-specific adjustments for Internet Explorer are all automatically generated.
The current version 1.2 is based on the functionality of YAML 3.0.6 and does not yet support the creation of the full-page layout variations (see the Layout Examples). The generated code is already fully compatible with YAML 3.1.

960 Grid System
Posted on 27. Aug, 2009 by SiteBox.
Essence
The 960 Grid System is an effort to streamline web development workflow by providing commonly used dimensions, based on a width of 960 pixels. There are two variants: 12 and 16 columns, which can be used separately or in tandem. Read More
Dimensions
The 12 column grid is divided into portions that are 60 pixels wide. The 16 column grid consists of 40 pixel increments. Each column has 10 pixels of margin on the left and right, which create 20 pixel wide gutters between columns. View demo.
Purpose
The premise of the system is ideally suited to rapid prototyping, but it would work equally well when integrated into a production environment. There are printable sketch sheets, design layouts, and a CSS file that have identical measurements.

The 960.css file is 5.4 KB. Repository at GitHub.

10 Ways To Make Your Site Accessible Using Web Standards
Posted on 22. Jun, 2009 by SiteBox.
By Michael Irigoyen, June 18th, 2009
Without argument, one of the most important things to consider when creating a website is that it be accessible to everyone who wants to view it. Does your website play nice with screen readers? Can a user override your style sheet with a more accessible one and still see everything your website has to offer? Would another Web developer be embarrassed if they saw your code? If your website is standards-compliant, you could more confidently answer these questions.
Accessibility
Let’s take a look at 10 ways to improve the accessibility of your XHTML website by making it standards-compliant. We’ll go the extra mile and include criteria that fall beyond the standards set by the W3C but which you should follow to make your website more accessible. Each section lists the criteria you need to meet, explains why you need to meet them and gives examples of what you should and shouldn’t do.

The past days I was looking for inspiration in famous old paintings, and got interested on “Starry Night” of Van Gogh and thought: Can I apply this to web design? And the answer is Yes! Then after several hours of work, here’s my tutorial for you, an artistic web design depicting a “Magic Night” concept.
Before we get started, let’s take a look at the image we’ll be creating. Want access to full PSD files and downloadable copies of every tutorial, including this one?
